What is Included in CBT Training?

Rider training on course

If you are looking to start your motorcycling journey, Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is the first step towards becoming a safe and confident rider. Introduced to ensure new riders have the fundamental skills needed to ride on public roads, CBT is a legal requirement for most new motorcycle and moped riders in the UK. At T & K Motorcycle Training, a DVSA Approved Motorcycle Training company based in Westonzoyland, we help new riders gain the knowledge and confidence they need to begin riding safely.

What is CBT Training?

CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training. It is a course designed to teach new riders the essential skills required to ride a motorcycle or moped safely on the road. CBT is not a test with a pass or fail result. Instead, it is a training programme that ensures riders reach a safe standard before receiving their CBT certificate.

Once successfully completed, riders receive a CBT certificate that allows them to ride within the conditions of their licence entitlement.

Introduction and Safety Briefing

The day typically begins with an introduction to motorcycle safety and a discussion about the responsibilities of riding on public roads.

Instructors will explain the importance of protective clothing, including helmets, gloves, jackets, and suitable footwear. Riders are also introduced to the basic principles of safe riding and hazard awareness.

Understanding how to stay visible and anticipate potential dangers is a key part of becoming a responsible rider.

Learning the Motorcycle Controls

Before moving off, riders are shown how the motorcycle operates. This includes learning the functions of:

  • Throttle
  • Brakes
  • Clutch
  • Gears
  • Indicators
  • Mirrors

Trainees are given plenty of time to familiarise themselves with the controls and gain confidence while stationary before progressing to practical riding exercises.

Practical Off-Road Training

A significant part of CBT takes place in a safe off-road training area. During this stage, riders practise:

  • Starting and stopping safely
  • Controlled braking
  • Gear changes
  • Steering and balance
  • Slow-speed manoeuvres
  • Emergency stopping procedures

These exercises help develop essential bike-handling skills before riders move into live traffic situations.

On-Road Riding Experience

Once the instructor is satisfied that the rider can control the motorcycle safely, the final stage involves supervised riding on public roads.

This section allows trainees to apply their new skills in real-world conditions while receiving guidance and feedback from a qualified instructor. Riders learn about:

  • Road positioning
  • Junctions and roundabouts
  • Traffic awareness
  • Speed management
  • Observation techniques

The aim is to build confidence while promoting safe riding habits from the very beginning.

Start Your Riding Journey with Confidence

CBT training provides the foundations for safe and enjoyable motorcycling. By learning the correct techniques and developing good habits early, riders can gain valuable experience and confidence on the road.
